TimesOnline has reported that Apple has recently filed a new patent that would allow an array of solar cells to be placed inside the screen for their ever-so-popular iPhone.
If they’re awarded the patent, which they entitled ‘Solar cells on portable devices’, we can expect to see new generation iPhones that will last much longer on a single battery charge. Apparently, they are not expecting it to be powerful enough to completely remove the need of a conventional phone charger.
The method described in the patent application would essentially turn the entire 2.4″x4.5″ face of the iPhone and iPod Touch into fully functional solar panels by placing stacks of solar cells underneath the screen.
I’ll admit that I’m not the biggest fan of the iPhone, but if I see this technology implemented in the near future, I just may have to give in to the temptation.
